Note: This is for metal zippers that have come off the "track" on one or both sides. There are different kinds of zippers as well. You may notice that a jacket or coat, for example, has a zipper that can be completely unzipped, while pants, pullovers, and pockets tend to have "fixed" zippers.
You will need:
A pair of needle nose pliers
adequate lighting
A decent amount of patience
1. Near the top of the zipper (I am repairing a pair of Jeans) where the teeth stop, you'll notice a small piece of metal shaped liked a U. This piece of metal keeps the zipper from coming off the track. Using your pliers, gently remove this piece from this side of the "track" that the zipper head has been disconnected from. (be careful, you'll need to put it back when you're done)
2. Pull the zipper head back onto the "track" and realign (pull all the way down, making sure the teeth line up on both sides. You may need to play around at this point. I noticed my zipper head had become loose from intense zipping. If this has happened to you, your two "tracks" will line up when zipped, but are not pulled together enough for the teeth to lock together.
3. Fixing the loose Zipper Head. Once the head is back on the zipper and lined up, simply squeeze the head with your pliers. This forces the zipper teeth to line up more tightly. Prying the head apart slightly will loosen the teeth, and make zipping easier. Like I said, play around until it zips the way you like.
4. Replace the little U shaped guard. Make sure the zipper head cannot go past it. Make sure it's clamped tightly, to avoid losing the piece in the wash.
5. Enjoy your pants!!!! This fix was absolutely free and took me about 10 minutes start to finish. I also had a toddler pulling on my arm trying to "help".
